Meimei-an stands at the top of a rise. Taking a break at the top of a rather steep stone stairway, one is surprised by a spectacular panorama with the Matsue Castle tower leaping into view. Within the premises of Meimei-an is a teahouse that was a favorite of a leading Japanese tea master, where you can enjoy matcha green tea and Japanese sweets while gazing at the Zen rock garden. This is an artistic dry garden that expresses natural forms with the meticulous aesthetic found only among the Japanese: rivers and ponds are shaped from fine gravel and mountains and islands from rocks. After indulging in sweet Japanese treats, the slightly bitter flavor and fetching aroma of matcha is delicious. Experience the culture of tea here in Matsue, which today sits alongside Kyoto and Kanazawa as a tea-drinker’s mecca.(This information is as of December 2017)
