Standing at the entrance, a world of sand unfolds before you. The Tottori Sand Dunes, formed over the centuries by the winds that whistle in from the Japan Sea, is the largest coastal sand dune in the country at 16km long east to west and 2km wide north to south. Going on wave patterns formed by the wind seem to stretch out to infinity and when you set foot on the dune, your bare feet sink deep into the fine sand. The dune between the visitor’s center and the sea is called the horse’s back and reaches a height of 47m. Walking through the soft sand is a challenge and as your steps gradually grow heavier, beads of sweat start to line the brow. Finally arriving at the summit of the dune, the stunning vista will have you lost for words as you enjoy the beautiful curve of the coastline and gaze down at the 360-degree panorama of a tumultuous Japan Sea. Once you have taken in the view, drop down to the water’s edge, dip your toe in the sea, gather shells and otherwise enjoy the beach to your heart’s content. Why not ride a camel? Pose for a photo or take one for a walk. On fine days you can also try your hand at paragliding.(This information is as of December 2017)
