Kure in Nakatosa-cho in Kochi Prefecture faces the Pacific Ocean, and is a fishing town where people have caught bonito with poles and lines for 400 years. Kure Taisho-machi Market, built near this charming port town, is the quintessential market of Kochi, with around 20 shops lined up in a narrow arcade about 40 meters long. They sell vegetables and hand-made food, as well as fish, and the market is loved by the locals as the “kitchen of the people.”
You can enjoy eating here as well as shopping. Among the food, “Kure-don” is a “don,” a rice-dish, made as you like with five choices, including the sashimi (sliced raw fish) and dried fish available in the market. Of all the ingredients, we definitely recommend that you try the “katsuo no tataki” (seared bonito). It is the comfort-food of Kochi Prefecture, quickly seared outside leaving the inside rare, and its aroma will whet your appetite.
Mr. Takahiro Tanaka, the head of Tanakasengyoten, a shop which creates don, is a “bonito sommelier” who ensures the quality of the bonito flesh. Closeness with the local people will allow you to make this delicious taste of the area even better.(This information is as of March 2018)
