“Izakaya” are Japanese-style bars that offer a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, mainly sake, and reasonably priced dishes that go well with alcohol. At this izakaya you can enjoy fresh seafood from all over Japan cooked in an unusual way. Its specialty is “genshiyaki” style of cooking food on skewers using a sunken hearth called an “irori” with burning charcoal on a bed of ash. In the past irori were commonly used not only for cooking but also for heating houses. Enjoy fish like ayu (sweetfish) and nodoguro (rosy seabass) grilled slowly to make their skin crispy and their meat soft and juicy. “Warayaki”, which is also popular, involves burning straw in a steel drum and searing fish such as katsuo (bonito) and sawara (Japanese Spanish mackerel) instantaneously in the high-rising flames.
