The gigantic sand sculpture, which is set amidst pine groves on Ariakehama Beach measures 122 meters east to west, 90 meters north to south, and 345 meters in circumference. It is said to have been created in a single night in 1633 in order to welcome the leader of the Takamatsu Domain. The sculpture is made in the shape of the “Kan’ei Tsuho” coins that were circulated during the Edo Period. The sculpture is illuminated every day from sunset to 10pm and, depending on the season, it is sometimes illuminated with gold light. The contrast between the sunset-stained Seto Inland Sea in the distance and the sand sculpture is impressive indeed. Due to the saying that those who have seen the sculpture lead long lives and never experience financial problems, it is now popular as a spiritual “power spot”.(This information is as of November 2017)
