Okonomiyaki considered to be a soul food by Japanese people throughout the country needless to say. Did you know that there are a large number of different versions of okonomiyaki in many regions of Japan? When visiting Onomichi your best bet is to try “Onomichiyaki”, the local version of okonomiyaki. The batter is spread out like a crepe and this is used to sandwich in meat, seafood, noodles, and other ingredients. In this it is similar to a standard Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, but the ingredients also include chicken gizzard and deep-fried squid, giving it a characteristically chewy texture and rich tastiness. The onomichiyaki at Iwabee, a shop in the Hondori shopping area is considered to be exquisitely good. Iwabee is a lacquerware shop that was established in the Edo Period, but the 9th generation owner renovated one corner of the premises to create an onomichiyaki shop. The batter is steamed until it is fluffy and this is paired with slightly spicy Carp-brand okonomiyaki sauce. Iwabee’s onomichiyaki became popular after featuring in a TV drama and now tourists from around Japan and beyond queue up outside to try it. (This information is as of November 2017)
