If you want to savor Okayama’s seafood, Daimyoan is the place for you. Their “kaisendon” is served in a large bowl about the size of two cupped hands half-filled with rice on top of which is layered so much fresh cooked and raw seafood that it almost spills out over the sides. Incredibly, they feature 15 different kinds of seafood including bluefin tuna, sea urchin, salmon roe, shrimp, crab, mantis shrimp, and conger eel. The delicious flavors and the effort required to reach down to the bed of rice due to the sheer volume of seafood layered on top provide clues as to why the kaisendon is so popular and why it is such crowd-pleaser. As the shop is located inside the Okayama City Central Wholesale Market customers can enjoy remarkably fresh seafood—selected by the discerning eye of the shop owner—primarily sourced from the local waters of the Seto Inland Sea but also everywhere from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south.
