I have always loved candy, especially hard candy. If you also like candy and snacks, or are looking for a fun gift for friends, check out Japan’s Biggest Candy Store. Set among rice fields in Okayama Prefecture, this shop has every type of candy and snack you could want–chocolates, chips, candy, gum, old-fashioned Japanese snacks, and more–for discount prices. As a long-term American resident in Okayama, I had been to the store before, but every time I go, I enjoy exploring the warehouse and I always find many interesting treats. Popular items include small candies that have lottery slips inside, items that combine candy and a toy, and seasonal products. My favorites are little chocolates shaped like shortcakes, bananas, money, and pudding. The sushi-shaped lollipops are also fun.
On holidays and weekends, an award-winning candy sculptor visits the shop and takes requests from guests. The sculptor forms shapes of animals and characters from candy that has been colored and warmed. When I visited, he made a bird, a dinosaur, a shark, and a popular anime character.
Whether you’re young or old, Japanese or a visitor, or like sweet or savory treats, there is something for everyone at Japan’s Biggest Candy Shop.
